Hi Rick,

Regarding booking Richie Lary in, I can't wait for planning this event because my wife and I are going on a 12-day vacation starting at the end of August. (I'll be back in time for the final part of Thomas setup, and I'll be at the museum for the whole event proper.) Even Richie doesn't know the schedule -- he's on vacation and unreachable too, just like Donald, but in Richie's case it lasts till mid August. I know my friend, he'll make whatever adjustments we need provided we confine it to his weekends. The worst case is that it all slips till after Thomas but before Halloween Express, if that event is still done.

So ... I'll keep you posted just FYI but I have to be like Eisenhower during the Pancho Villa fracas when we invaded Mexico to capture the famous anarchist bandido. Eisenhower was aide de camp to General Blackjack Pershing, but he became separated from Pershing, who somehow was off in the boonies where there was little action, incommunicado, while Eisenhower found himself in the thick of the fighting. He did what any good American staff guy would do -- he began issuing orders in Pershing's name, the orders being those he believed Pershing himself would have issued had Pershing been the one on the scene. So for something like 36 hours, most of Pershing's invasion force officers believed they were receiving orders from General Pershing when in fact they came from First Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower. (This was the same affair in which the young George Patton offed some Bad Guys with his pearl handled Colt .45 SAA's, the very guns he would wear into battle in WW2.)

In the end if schedules can't be reconciled it's not really a problem. If Donald can't make the dates in question I will show Richie around anyway. If we don't get a steamer for him we can punt, or Richie and I can nip out to Las Vegas and run a commercial one on his nickel. (We're used to doing stuff like that on the spur of the moment. Vegas is only 15 hours away if we drive non stop, just as my wife and I will drive nonstop to San Diego in ... um ... about 22 hours.)

FYI, I'm 99.99% confident that Richie will want to spend the years needed to qualify at CRRM for brakeman, then conductor, then engineer, or whatever the museum's ladder of progress is these days. I know my man -- I once arranged a huge group Arkansas River rafting party out of Salida for Springs DEC people -- and Richie's reaction to this trip during which most of our rafts flipped (and some people were in serious trouble in the water as a result) was to take a year to qualify as a licensed river raft guide, after which he and I did our own white water trips. The high point for us was when he, I and our wives ran the Roaring Fork in full June flood, after which the raging Colorado upstream of Rifle seemed rather tame in comparison. (The don't call it the Roaring Fork for nothing.)

You will like Richie a lot. He's a great guy even though he is literally a genius and a techie. I don't know what music he listens to today but he was the one who introduced me to Talking Heads with "Burning Down The House"
